Steven J Guscott’s The Book of Prophecy : A review

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but I thought I’d take a little time to share with you a review of a great fantasy book I read back in August. I’ve been meaning to review this book for a long time and I’m delighted I finally got the chance to! Here it is!

The Book of Prophecy

The Book of Prophecy was a thoroughly enjoyable read. The main protagonist, Dragatu is an interesting character and I appreciate that he is a youth, then man who had truly good intentions for his people, however, he is blind to the fact that the stringent lifestyle he follows is not something that everyone else can do.

It’s this fault in particular that can make Dragatu at times a disagreeable character and one at times, I did not like, but at the same time, it made his character the far more believable. It’s this staunch belief that his “busy” way of life, his inability to accept the way of others choose to live and his obsession with keeping the Book of Prophecy, which ends up being his “Achilles heel”.

There are other characters I would have loved to have explored a little more, his brothers, Unilus and Phoenon, who are in their own right blessed and given special powers to use to aide their people. Also Dragatu’s wife, Freta, who is a strong female character and influence on Dragatu’s life.

Although the book spans some twenty six years, it has the feeling of the beginning of a family saga. It is well written and the world developed in a way that I could easily imagine the surroundings. I really look forward to seeing where Steven J Guscott’s future books go and whether the other characters will play a roll in them.

Well worth 4 out of 5 stars!

Distant Worlds – Welcomes Sophie E Tallis!

Talented Sophie interviews . . . Sophie! 🙂

Sophie E Tallis - Author/Illustrator

This is the eighth post of a brand new blog series, as I dip my toes into the mysterious waters of author interviews – and as today is my birthday (gulp) and the auspicious publishing date for a very cool fantasy/sci-fi charity anthology I’m in (A World Of Their Own), it’s my turn to be in the hot ejector seat!

Having watched so many fantastic interviewers (Tricia Drammeh and her Authors to Watch, AFE Smith (see below), Katrina Jack and her New Authors section and Susan Finlay’sMeet the Author to name a few of the best – please check out their wonderful blogs), I’ve always been a little reluctant to throw my hat into the ring…but here goes!

One of my all-time favourite worldbuilding PC games, is Sid Meier’s ‘Alpha Centauri’. So, in homage to that (and a shameless rip off of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island…

The Great Grimbold Discount Weekend Continues – Interview with Sophie E Tallis

Joanne Hall interviews the charming Sophie E Tallis as part of the Great Grimbold Sale weekend!

Joanne Hall

Today, as part of the Great Grimbold discount weekend, I’m very happy to welcome my fellow Kristell Ink author Sophie E Tallis to Making Things Up For A Living. Sophie’s novel White Mountain was published in December, and she’s agreed to submit to some gentle questioning on here. Hello Sophie!

Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a writer, illustrator, insomniac and artist and a bit of a nerd – that may be an understatement. I’m a fantasy/sci-fi geek and ex-teacher who got paroled after sixteen years and I now work in a library. I’ve always written and illustrated stories, have a thirst for learning and have far too many interests and never enough time. I’ve lived in a few places but have now settled, sort of, in the wilds of Gloucestershire off a lane with no name, with my family and four huge white wolves…

Sammy cover

Hi Sammy and welcome to my home in cyberspace. It is not often the boot is on the other foot so, as my publisher, I am going to have fun learning how you put together your wonderful book. I have enjoyed it immensely and I can see that like Dune and Lord of the Rings, it is one of those books a person can go back and reread time and time again, probably finding a little nuance on each reading. My review is at the end.

Would you like to tell the readers about you?

Well, I live in the UK with my husband, my 13 cats and 2 dogs…I am a bit of a crazy cat lady, but I make no apologies for it. I work full-time as a detective in the police and specialize in domestic and sexual abuse. It’s thoroughly rewarding and something that is quite close to…
